Leading Aussie Sport and Celebrity Ambassadors to Stand Up for Equality
Stand Up Events’ Angie Greene has been asking the tough questions within the sporting world over the past year since launching her dedicated not-for-profit Stand Up Events to challenge discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community in sport.
Since then, Greene’s calls have not gone unanswered – with more than 30 committed Sporting and Celebrity Ambassadors, along with a growing list of organisations including Collingwood Football Club, Jaggad, Grill’d, Oliver & York Public Affairs, Lendlease and most significantly, CGU Insurance, signing up to support Stand Up Events’ inaugural fundraising and awareness event, CGU’s Move in May.
CGU’s Move In May is a 4km or 8km walk or run taking place around Melbourne’s Botanical Gardens Tan Track on Sunday 22 May, 2016. The ticketed event aims to not only raise funds to support the activation of positive Stand Up Events educational and equality programs in community clubs, but also acts as an important visual representation of support behind the message that there is no place for discrimination against the LGBTIQ community in sport or society in general.
Overwhelmed by the support of the Stand Up Events message to date, Greene says CGU’s Move In May will be the key turning point for the cause, bringing not only important funding for the rollout of the educational programs but will also act as a strong public message of support for this important issue facing our sporting culture.
“We know that inequality exists within our Australian sporting culture,” said Greene. “CGU’s Move in May is about coming together and demonstrating the significant amount of support that exists in our community for the important message of equality.”
“When we put our runners on for CGU’s Move In May we are saying there is zero room for discrimination. We are saying there is zero room for anything other than acceptance for diversity. And we are saying there is zero room for exclusion. This is because CGU’s Move In May is about people who are standing up and saying I will fight against LGBTIQ discrimination in sport and society and I will proudly walk or run alongside our CGU’s Move In May Ambassadors and the greater community – rainbow or otherwise – to fight the fight,” said Greene.
“Sport is the backbone of our national identity and events such as CGU’s Move in May will help the LGBTIQ community gain greater acceptance and inclusion,” said Greene. “The event coincides with International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT – May 17th) and is an event for everyone that believes in equality,” she said.
CGU’s Move in May will be held on Sunday, 22 May 2016. The event will be held in Melbourne, around Botanical Gardens. Tickets via www.standupevents.com.au
